PortLiner: A Value Chain for Sustainable Inland Shipping with Flow Battery Technology

PortLiner develops flow battery–powered vessels through an integrated value chain, working with partners in ship design, battery technology, charging infrastructure, and financing.

PortLiner’s Value Chain Approach to Sustainable Inland Shipping

PortLiner approaches the development of its flow battery technology for inland shipping through an integrated value chain approach. This approach encompasses all essential links required for the development, construction, and operation of emission-free inland vessels and the associated infrastructure. By collaborating with more than 40 companies, PortLiner has created a strong network of partners that collectively contribute to the sustainability of the inland shipping sector.

Key Links in PortLiner’s Value Chain

PortLiner’s value chain consists of several phases and partners that ensure the successful development of flow battery–powered vessels:

1. Ship Design and Naval Architecture

The vessel design forms the foundation for integrating flow battery technology and other sustainable systems. PortLiner works closely with designers and engineers to optimize vessels for the requirements of emission-free navigation.

2. Shipbuilding: Hull and Outfitting

Vessel construction is carried out with input from maritime suppliers specializing in sustainable shipbuilding. This includes hull construction, system installation, and vessel outfitting.

3. Battery Configuration and Equipment

PortLiner selects optimal battery configurations for its vessels, including the supply of flow batteries, battery management systems, and electrolyte. This technology provides the required emission-free propulsion.

4. Electrical Systems Engineering and Installation

The integration of electrical systems, including battery installation and charging technology, is a critical part of the process. This ensures optimal vessel performance based on flow battery technology.

5. Charging Infrastructure and Power Supply

PortLiner develops and implements battery charging infrastructure, enabling vessels to be charged at various locations. This also includes the delivery of the necessary electricity supply.

7. Financing for Vessels and Infrastructure

PortLiner arranges the necessary financing to develop and bring vessels, battery equipment, and charging infrastructure to market.

8. Chartering and Logistics

The final link in the value chain involves chartering, with PortLiner working alongside terminals, brokers, and cargo owners to deploy vessels for commercial transport.

PortLiner’s Partners: Collaboration for Sustainable Inland Shipping

PortLiner organizes and unites all essential links in the value chain, enabling efficient and sustainable production of flow battery–powered vessels. Below is a brief overview of some of our key partners who, together with PortLiner, are making green inland shipping a reality:

  • Maritime suppliers for shipbuilding and outfitting
  • Technology partners for battery systems and electrolyte configurations
  • Financing partners for sustainable inland shipping investments
  • Logistics partners for chartering and cargo distribution via emission-free vessels

This collaboration enables rapid and large-scale implementation of flow battery technology in inland shipping.
